Here is my adapted recipe for PeanutButter and Apple cookies. You should make a batch for the pooch in your life. (Although, I actually had to divvy up this batch so that R wouldn't eat them all. He covers it with honey and eats three before you blink.)
This recipe doesn't seem to require exact measurements. I barely measure. The best thing about baking for dogs is that they'll eat just about anything (or at least, mine do) so you really can't mess up.
1 1/2 cups - whole wheat flour
2 or 3 generous spoonfuls of wheat germ (optional)
1/2 cup - all purpose flour
1 tablespoon - baking powder
1 generous cup - all natural peanut butter (chunky or smooth - R prefers brands that contain ONLY peanuts, no added salt - so that's what I had on hand)
A few glops of all natural, no sugar added, applesauce
3/4 cup - skim milk
honey
cookie cutter in the shape of your choice
Preheat oven to 400F.
1. Mix dry ingredients together in a medium bowl
2. Mix peanut butter and milk together in another bowl. Work it with a fork until it's all smooth. It will get there. Add the generous glops of applesauce to the wet mixture and mix it up again.
3. Pour the wet stuff into the dry stuff and mix.
4. Get your hands in there and knead until it forms a dough. It doesn't take too long.
5. On a floured surface, spread out dough and roll out until it's about 1/4" thick. I don't own a rolling pin, so I used a water bottle. It worked.
6. Using your cookie cutter, cut out the shapes and plop them onto a foil lined baking sheet.
7. Drizzle with honey. Use as much or as little as you want.
Depending on your oven, bake for 15 - 20 minutes until golden brown and firm-ish to the touch.
Keep biscuits in the fridge. I really don't know how long they last.
* You could use more or less applesauce or grate half an apple into it, maybe add some cinnamon and R has requested that I use more peanut butter next time around.
Have a fantastic day!
