Lunchtime Romance - crash and burn

During what would have been a fairly typical lunch with my sister where we talked about our hair, Nori and various topics of interest to us; we were privileged to witness a rather awkward conversation between this boy and this girl. This is how it played out.

[Scene: Busy Lunch Room
Asian Girl with funky hair & funky makeup completely immersed in text book
Asian Boy - fairly average; wearing jeans of the correct length approaches]

Boy: "Hi. So I noticed that you're still studying. You were studying when I first started my lunch and you're still studying even though I'm finished my lunch"

Girl: "....."

[camera pans over to the next table and focuses on the open grins of the two girls sitting there, shamelessly & obviously eavesdropping]

Boy: "What are you studying?"

Girl: "Political theory"

Boy: "That's cool. You're thinking as hard as an IBM Processor!"

[audible sounds of snickering in the background coming from the direction of the table over]

Girl: "....."

Boy: "What is your background?"

Girl: "Malaysia"

Boy: "Oh really? But where are your parents from?"

[two pairs of eyes start rolling at the table over]

Girl: "Malaysia"

Boy: "You look like you have some chinese in you."

Girl: "Well, I was born here... but there are chinese people in Malaysia."
[starts flipping pages in her textbook suggestively]

Boy: "uh huh uh huh... So when do you graduate?"

Girl: "I have another year to go."

Boy: "So you're in 3rd year?"

Girl: "....." (then decides not to be rude and nods)

Boy: [high fives her on a job well done] "Right on. Right on."

[Girls at the next table collapse into their lunch trays in poor imitations of people oblivious to what is going on next to them]

Boy: You know there are some really antisocial people here. We should really make the time to get to know each other.

Girl: "......"

Boy: "I think I can squeeze you in on my Friday nights."

[Camera catches the girls at the next table staring at the ceiling blinking away tears]

Girl: "Well, I have a boyfriend....and uh, i don't usually um...hang out with people I don't know"

Boy: "Oh really? That's kinda too bad..." [general noise of the cafeteria overtake the conversation and the girls at the next table lean in closer to try and overhear some more]

Boy leaves.

[Girls curse the noise of the lunchroom but share a sympathetic laugh with the funky girl at the next table.]

Funky Girl: "Did you guys HEAR that?"

Girls: "Yeah."

Funky Girl: "I do give him props."

Girls: "Yeah. I can't believe he high-fived you"
